Howard H. Chou is a professor-equivalent-level Senior Engineer at the Center for Synthetic Biochemistry (CSB), Institute of Synthetic Biology (iSynBio), Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
Dr. Chou graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Engineering in Computer Science. In 2012, he received his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a graduate student of Prof. Jay Keasling. Before joining SIAT, he served as the Vice President of R&D at a well-known biotechnology company with global sales. He is the lead inventor on more than 15 patents and patent applications, and his patents have been licensed to well-known companies. He has published in international journals, including “Nature Communications”, “Nature Biotechnology”, and “Applied & Environmental Microbiology”. Due to his contribution to the field, he was awarded the “Second Zhangjiang Outstanding Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talent Award”, the “Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission Outstanding Technical Leader Award”, and other prizes.
His research group focuses on developing the next generation of biological catalysts that can help meet the ever-growing need for new medicines and new materials, and the next generation of sustainable industrial processes using biology.
