Youming ZHANGAcademician/ Chair Professor

The research group is mainly engaged in DNA cloning and manipulation technology development based on Red/ET homologous recombination. The applications include microbial genome editing, discovery of microbial natural products, pathway engineering, heterologous expression and combinatorial biosynthesis.

Professor Youming Zhang is the director of the Department of Engineering Biology, Faculty of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Director of recombineering and genome manipulation center, Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology Innovation, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Member of German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). Member of Academia Europaea. The expert of the national key talent program. 

Professor Zhang has been devoted to the development and application of DNA/genome-editing technology for more than 30 years. Zhang Youming has published more than 140 SCI papers until now, 11 of which were published on Nature and its series journals. The total impact factors reach more than 1030, the total citations are more than 12450 times, and H index is 53. Professor Zhang was named as Elsevier's “Highly Cited Scholar in China” from 2018 to 2020. He has obtained more than 26 issued patents, including 11 international invention patents. There are more than 30 patents under application.
