Qiang Hu is a Chair Professor in Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his B.Sc. degree in Biology at Hubei University, and Ph.D. in Algal Biotechnology from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. He was a tenured Professor at Arizona State University and co-director of the Arizona Algae Innovation Technology Center, previously in USA. Professor Hu has long been engaged in R&D on algal biology, microalgae biotechnology & advanced biomanufacturing,and he is one of the World's Top 2% Scientists (2020~2021, Stanford University, USA). Prof. Hu has published more than 160 research papers and reviews in international SCI journals (over 18,000 total citations in Google Scholar, H-index 64, i10 index 121) and has been selected as one of the Most Cited Chinese Researchers in 2021, Elsevier.
Basic and applied research on microalgae with special focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms of lipid and carotenoid biosynthesis. Microalgal biotechnology for food, feed and bioproducts,as well as for wastewater bioremediation,resource recovery and utilization. Major research areas include: 1) synthetic and cell biology of microalgae; 2) biosynthesis and regulation of lipids and carotenoids; 3) photosynthesis, growth physiology and mass culture of microalgae; 4) the relationship and regulatory mechanisms between cellular central carbon metabolism and target product formation; 5) large/ultra-large photobioreactor design, systems integration and scale-up; 6) exploitation of microalgae for food, health; microalgae-based wastewater bioremediation and resource utilization.
